Introduction to a future PA

Hi everyone, my name is Lindsey. I am a junior here at the University of Oklahoma. I am originally from the Dallas, TX area much like a big portion of the students here at OU. My major is Health and Exercise Science, pre-PA. I have always been interested in sports and sport related injuries so I plan to become a PA for an orthopedic surgeon. The coolest thing about being a Health and Exercise Science major, or any major that is on a medical track, is that you have to take anatomy here at the university. The really unique thing about OU's anatomy course is that it is with cadaver. While that may freak most people out, the opportunities OU students have with having a cadaver experience really help for later admission into medical and graduate programs. Out of all my classes I have taken so far, that class would have to be the most challenging but also the coolest experience.

As I said earlier, I am a big sports girl and root for all the Dallas teams, the Dallas Stars and Dallas Mavericks being my favorites. Over the break, my sister and I attended many hockey games. My cousin also had the fun opportunity to play hockey in Dallas's most famous football stadium, the Cotton Bowl, which we also attended. My most fond memories are those I make with my dad at Mavericks games. We have been going to games together ever since December of 2011.

My favorite things in the world are dogs. I have three labradoodles at home, Beamer, Lulu, and Bishop. Beamer and Lulu are liter-mates and are almost 3 years old. Bishop is my sister's puppy and he is 8 months old. Like I said, my sister and I love the Dallas Stars so she named her dog after her favorite player, Ben Bishop. Before these 3 dogs, we had 2 other labradoodles, Stitch and Sadie, that passed away my senior year of high school. As you can tell, my family's favorite kinds of dogs are labradoodles because they are so soft and they also don't shed their fur.

  1. Hi Lindsey, nice to meet you! I literally just commented on another blog written by an HES major from Dallas, so I thought that was an interesting coincidence. You have my respect for getting through that anatomy course, I heard it's super hard and a few of my friends had to drop it. Your dogs are so cute in their pictures! I'm actually scared of dogs and I don't really know how to get over it, any suggestions?

  2. I have heard about anatomy class from many students over the years, Lindsey! The content of the class is challenging enough for sure, but the cadaver must be intense. That made me curious about the history of anatomical science in India, and it turns out they do have an ancient anatomical science too: Anatomy in ancient India... it mentions "chance observations of improperly buried human bodies" and of course that made me think of the terrible battles in the epics, where there are bodies on the battlefield. I had never thought that ancient doctors would probably be learning anatomy that way... but it makes sense! So, thanks to your Introduction, that is something I learned today. :-)
And your Labradoodles are so cute: I don't think I have heard of that breed before. It's so sad to lose a pet... I lost my beautiful girl cat last fall, but I put a picture of her on my computer wallpaper so it's like she's still watching while I work, like she used to do.

Hey Lindsey, nice to meet you! I love how many pictures you included of your dogs. I also have a dog that lives here in Norman with me. Her name is Taro and she is a 7 pound pompano, so I know your dogs could probably step on my dog and crush her haha. Have you ever heard of a mini golden doodle? I am OBSESSED with them they are like tiny teddy bears!

  4. Hi Lindsay,

Your dogs are adorable. I know it's just the way her fur is laying, but Sadie looks like she's part basset hound. My great-grandmother and aunt both had poodles. They were such great dogs. I can understand why breeders would cross them with Labradors. I have a chocolate Lab/ German Shepherd mix named Lexi. She's sweet and fun like a Lab and incredibly smart like a German Shepherd. The best part is when she hears my husband and I tell the kids "bedtime," she tries to herd them to their beds and growls at them if they try to come back into the living room after bedtime is called.

Congratulations on making it through the cadaver hurdle. My cousin wanted to be a physical therapist, but she fainted the first time they uncovered the cadaver in class. She promptly changed her major to business management.

Good luck, and I look forward to getting to know you throughout the semester.

  5. Hi Lindsey, so nice to meet you! I LOVE Dallas, I hope to move there long term post-graduation. I love that you like anatomy, a lot of my pre-med friends tell me about it and they typically say its crazy hard! So I'm so happy you are enjoying it! I am also a big sports girl, but I'm not too into the Dallas sports teams. Hopefully, if I'm able to move to Dallas I can get into Dallas teams!

  6. Hi Lindsey!
I also am from Dallas, Texas and am a huge fan of the Mavs. Ive been a Mavs fan for since I can remember. I was even at one of the playoff games in 2011. I love watching Luka play and I can't wait to watch him in the allstar game. Back at home I also have a labradoodle who I miss Deeply!

  7. Hi Lindsey! I'm Pre-PA too and I'm hoping to work in family practice after and maybe doing something associated with Health Psychology/the importance of physical and mental health! I took Anatomy in Fall 2018 and it was one of the best classes I've taken here. Cindy is a great professor and I also had Jess (who is a saint) and Kris as my TAs! It was a hard class, but I got to meet a lot of cool people too and it was a super interesting subject. Your dogs are adorable and they warm my heart! I'm definitely a dog person too and I can tell that they are so loved by you. Wishing you luck on your Pre-PA journey and this semester!

  8. Hey Lindsey! I personally think it's really cool that you got to work with a cadaver! I've been a volunteer EMT with my hometown fire department for nearly five years now, so that sort of stuff doesn't really phase me anymore. I'm not pre anything though. I don't know how any of you guys do it. Props for getting through the classes! Also, your dogs are SUPER cute!

  9. Hi Lindsey,
I think it’s so interesting that you mentioned the cadaver lab. I actually got the opportunity to come visit the lab in highschool, and it was such a cool experience. I don’t remember too much about it, but I think it’s very important that they treated the bodies with the upmost respect. It so great that people donate their bodies for science, and we can learn so much from their contributions.

  10. Hi Lindsey,

I think it's great that you want to be a PA. I thought of a career as a PA as well. I ended up choosing engineering instead haha. All my pre-health friends have told me about that daunting anatomy course and how many long, late nights they've spent studying for it. Good luck in all your future endeavors!

  11. Hi Lindsey. Nice to be introduced to you! Your dogs are adorable - I have never had labradoodles before, but these are too cute. It's cool to see a fan of the Dallas Stars. I lived in Dallas for a while when I was a kid and the Stars never seemed to get enough support. Your cadaver class sounds really interesting, and I didn't know that OU's anatomy curriculum was particularly noteworthy, but it seems like there's always something new to learn about OU!

  12. Hi Lindsey,
I LOVE your labradoodles. They are so cute! I am actually in love with goldendoodles. When you mix poodles with other breeds, they always look like teddy bears to me, and I love teddy bears. Also, props to you for taking anatomy and liking it! I know how hard of a class that it and I'm so glad to hear you like it. I am pre-med and never have I seen a cadaver. Hopefully, I don't get too freaked out. Also, I am very prideful of my state aka Oklahoma! I support Oklahoma all the way like you do with Dallas! So I definitely get that.

  13. Hi Lindsey!
Your dogs are super adorable. My family almost got a labradoodle but my mom backed out at the last minute after realizing how big they get. We instead got an Australian shepherd named Maisie. Best of luck as you finish your time up at OU and get to move on to PA school. That's really awesome that you are big fans of Dallas teams; it's nice that the Mavs won a championship back in 2011--I hope you were able to see that. Even today the Mavs are looking really good again thanks to Luca.

  14. Hey Lindsey,
Great photos! Good luck with the rest of your education, it looks like its going to be quite a journey. I just got back from the DFW area. My wife and I stayed in Plano for the weekend so we could check out some rock climbing gyms in the area and have a weekend away from Oklahoma! We had a great time, and I'm sure you miss it sometimes. Hope you get to catch a Mavs game soon!

  15. Hey Lindsey! I was pre-PA at one point but decided the path wasn't for me. I also tried Anatomy for about a week and then realized I couldn't handle it. Good on your for getting through it! The world definitely needs compassionate PAs who care about the work they do. Also, your dogs!!! I love them!!! The only dogs I'm not allergic to are poodles, and poodle mixes are the absolute sweetest. Those pictures of them made my day! Anyways, hope your semester is going well!

  16. Hey Lindsay,

I am a big dog person so thank you so much for all the great pics! Your dogs are adorable. I want a golden doodle so bad haha. They're adorable hypoallergenic and sooo smart.

Congrats on making it through cadaver season. My y dad is a PA and said he always found it so cool. I am pre-dental and definitely do not.

Good luck with the semester and keep cranking!

  17. Hey Lindsey,
I do agree that it seems that a lot of students come to OU from Texas, especially Dallas. It makes me wonder why that is. I bet being a PA will be very enjoyable especially since you are a very big sports fan. That is such a long time to be going to Mavericks games and it is awesome you spend the time with your dad. My dad bond over OU football so I know the feeling. I hope this semester and class goes well for you!

  18. Hi, Lindsey!
It’s so nice to meet you! I actually started off at Pre-PA when I first began college. I honestly kind of regret not fully committing to it and changing my major, although I do love the degree that I am going to be graduating with. I took Anatomy last year and at first, I thought that the cadaver was so weird. But, after the first day, you get so used to it that it’s a normal thing.

  19. Howdy again Lindsey,
My family also has labradoodles, they’re some good pups. Although they are some wild puppies for sure. I’m always stoked to see people pursuing being PAs, that’s such a noble profession. Have you been to any FC Dallas games? They are in Frisco rather than Dallas proper, but they are really fun – they get a good turnout and soccer games are a blast. Best of luck!

  20. Lindsey,

You're a hockey fan?! YES. Hockey is so much fun to see in person! The only problem? You like the Dallas Stars. As a St. Louis Blues fan, I'm pretty sure that makes us sworn enemies- football is the same. I'm a Packers fan, and you root for the Cowboys. Oof.
Your super model labradoodles make up for the fact that you root for teams I was raised to dislike. Being a PA seems exciting and rewarding. I wish you luck in your efforts to become a PA! I'm one of those people that I think would not enjoy that cadaver class. I'm glad there are people like you who can appreciate those sorts of things.
    It's nice to meet you!

  21. I am pre-PA too! I am planning on taking anatomy this summer and I am nervous for it a bit. It is cool that you like it so much!! I have only heard good things about it. OMG THE PUPPIES ARE SOOOOO CUTE!!!!! I bet they give great cuddles!! My dream dog is a cockadoodle and it is basically a smaller version of your puppy. SO CUTE!!

  22. Lindsey,

I love being in classes like this one because it allows me to interact with people whose majors are different than mine! I transferred to OU as a junior, so I've really only had classes with people who are within my own major. I think working with cadavers is SO cool! In high school, my biology class took a field trip to a travelling exhibit of the human body and it was all real human bodies preserved so that we could look at and interact with different organs/ systems of the body. I got to hold a human brain! It was so cool! I also really love dogs and I love it when I go to read someone's intro and they include pictures of their pets! It always makes my day! :)

  24. Hi Lindsey,

I love it when people upload pictures of their dogs to their introductions! Your dogs look incredible. A lot of dogs look really cute when they're small, and then loose that when they grow up, but Labradoodles stay cute forever. I'm a native Houstonian, but I'm honestly a big fan of Dallas– it's a great city! I can't imagine cadaver season being a part of my curriculum that is so cool.

  25. Hi Lindsey,
I love all the pictures of your dogs. They are all really cute. My family actually has 3 half poodle mixes too (schnoodles to be exact). Saw that you are a Mavs fan. I am a thunder fan, but I love watching Luka Doncic playing. Congrats on getting the trade so you could draft him. He is definitely going to have a bright career ahead of him for the Mavs.

  26. Hi Lindsey,
It’s nice to meet you! I’m from Grand Prairie so reading your post it had so many familiar places. I love the pictures of your dogs! I have two and they just make everything more fun. I love going to see the Stars play but I can’t stand the squeaky shoes in basketball. I go to Thunder games with my husband but it drives me crazy.

Week 5 Story: The It Couple

Updated version of the story located at  College and Karma . (Express Your Love; Source:  Needpix ) At the University of Oklahoma, Ryan and Sarah were the couple to be. Everyone envied what they had and wanted a relationship like theirs, even if it meant ruining their relationship. Ryan and Sarah were juniors at the university, but the moment they locked eyes at a frat party one Halloween night during freshman year, they were hooked. It was love, and lust, at first sight. Sarah was a preacher's daughter and had only had short relationships in high school while Ryan was Mr. Popular Jock and definitely made a reputation for himself as a player. Let's just say, high school Sarah and Ryan probably would not have been a thought in anyone's mind. Sarah was the sweet, loyal girl who was friends with everyone and Ryan was the jock that was a part of the exclusive, "cool" crowd. Sarah's dad, Joe, being a preacher, was very strict and concerned about who his dau
