When you're in high school, you think every single thing that happens is important into shaping you. I was no exception. All my life, I was a dancer. I started doing competitive dance was a young age and I thought I had my future figured out. I was either going to be a professional dancer or live out my fantasy of trying out for So You Think You Can Dance. Once I entered high school, dance took over my life. My freshman and sophomore years, I still did competitive dance in addition to joining my high school's dance team. Junior year was different. Once I was an upperclassman, I had the opportunity to become a leader on my team. It was meant for the more advanced girls who not only wanted to showcase their dance skill but also their leadership skills. So junior year tryouts came and went and I was a junior lieutenant. My life was great and I was preparing for senior year tryouts. It was between me and this other girl for the top officer position and the number 1 leader on the team. Obviously we both wanted it very badly and we were both 100% qualified to do it. The tryout process contains multiple parts to test dance ability and leadership ability. After you perform your solo, you went straight into an interview with some very, VERY intimidating judges. I remember my interview like it was yesterday. I have always been on the more introverted side and I knew that in order to get the position, I needed to step out. I was asking a question about it and the second I said my answer, I knew I had lost the position. In my attempt to be completely transparent and honest with the judges, I stuck my foot in my mouth.
Looking back, I know it happened for a reason. I was still a strong leader on my team and had the respect of so many. Although I was not the number 1 leader, I was still an important piece in the group. That night, I thought my high school career would be done and I would be miserable, but it was not. I learned even more about myself and my abilities and it definitely shaped me today.
Author's Note: I chose to write a biography to show the strides I have made in my life, even if it is just from 3 years ago. I chose to write the biography from first person because I felt it best displayed my emotions and feelings during the time. I think first person makes the story relatable and understandable to people who have been in my shoes and also people who have not.
